From wildlife research to reserve management, Daniel from Askham Bryan College has immersed himself in the world of African conservation through his Turing Scheme-funded project at Zingela.

Giraffe identification, snare sweeps, invasive species removal, fish tagging, bird ringing and reptile monitoring are just some of the activities he has experienced, while also supporting visiting gap groups throughout their programmes.

But Daniel’s project has been about much more than practical conservation. Working alongside experienced professionals, discovering Zulu culture and taking on responsibilities with visiting groups have helped him develop his confidence, communication and leadership skills – while building valuable connections for his future.

In this video, Daniel looks back on what he describes as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” and shares how the experience has broadened his knowledge and his ambitions for the next chapter of his life.

After an incredible Turing Scheme-funded project in South Africa, Amelia and Sam are reflecting on an unforgettable experience.

Over the past weeks, they have contributed to wildlife conservation through giraffe monitoring, species research and field data collection, while also leading activities for visiting groups, developing new skills and immersing themselves in South African culture.
